Luke 9:57-62 (New King James Version)
The Cost of Discipleship
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Do you suppose Jesus was speaking figuratively here? Do you suppose He didn't REALLY MEAN that we are to forsake all things and all people who will not walk this narrow path? It is as if we think that Jesus was being tongue in cheek all the time. What hypocrisy! I for one am becoming painfully aware of what this passage means and I have decided it might be best for me to memorize it so that I can do battle against the enemy's continual assault on my mind. I take my Lord seriously because it was no joke that He came down from above and endured the Wrath of the Father for me. How could I spit on Him by thinking that He will overlook my silence just to spare myself reproach? To be honest, even if I wanted to and I honestly have tried to be silent at times, it just seems I CANNOT! There is such a desire in me to proclaim TRUTH that all the gates of Hell cannot stop me. Sorry to those who don't appreciate it, but I serve ONE GOD AND ONE GOD ONLY!
